- Assistance in choosing and completing forms for Department of Child Support actions
- Information and samples on the following court matters:
- Child custody or visitation
- Child and spousal support
- Parentage/Paternity Actions
- Petitions for divorce, legal separation, domestic partnership or nullity
- Proofs of service
- Modifications to existing orders
- Fee waiver application
- Response to court actions
- Findings and orders after hearings
- Finalizing dissolution of marriage, legal separations, nullities, domestic partnership and parentage actions
- Domestic Violence (reviewed for accuracy only after forms are completed)
- Step-parent adoptions
- Enforcement of orders
- Emancipations
- Civil Harassments (reviewed for accuracy only after forms are completed)
- Guardianship Orientations are every Thursday at 3:30 p.m. in Room 18
- Conservatorship Orientations are held on the 1st and 3rd Monday of every month at 1:00 p.m. in Room 18. The Pro Per Clinic will assist with guardianships and conservatorships of the person only (no estate assistance) on Wednesday or Friday from 8:30am to 12:00pm only after you have attended the orientation.
- The Pro Per Clinic provides email and written correspondence assistance to those who live outside the County of San Joaquin and neighboring areas. Email assistance is available at sballin@courts.san-joaquin.ca.us or by mail at Facilitator's Office 540 E. Main St. Stockton, CA 95202. (We will be unable to provide forms to you as there is a cost. You may download the forms from our website or www.courtinfo.ca.gov.)
What Can I Expect?
When you visit the Family Law Pro Per Clinic, you will need to take a number and have a seat in the hallway. When your number appears on the sign, a staff person will review your request, provide procedural assistance, help with understanding the court system, and make any needed referrals and guidance on completing forms.
What Should I Bring with Me?
- A copy of all previously filed court documents relating to your case. Your papers should be organized by date, with the oldest paperwork on the bottom and the newest on the top.
- Forms may be purchased from the Court Clerk's Office or downloaded from our website or www.courtinfo.ca.gov.
- Do not bring children to any of the Clinic’s locations or orientations.
Location and Hours
At the Downtown Stockton Courthouse Annex at 540 E. Main St, Stockton, CA, 95202: (map & directions)
- The Family Law Pro Per Clinic is available to the public Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. The Clinic will be closed the 3rd Wednesday of every month as a result of the legislatively mandatory court closure. The last number of the day is given out at 3:00 p.m. in order to assist all persons before closing at 4:00 p.m. The clinic is located at the Downtown Stockton Courthouse Annex at 540 E. Main St, Stockton, CA, 95202.
- Persons are seen on a first come, first served basis.
- The Pro Per Clinic has one evening clinic on the 3rd Thursday of each month at Humphreys College. The clinic is located at 6650 Inglewood Ave., Stockton, CA 95207.
- Guardianship Orientations are every Thursday at 3:30 p.m. in Room 18

The Pro Per Clinic does not provide legal advice or represent you in court. There is no attorney-client relationship between you and Clinic staff. The Clinic does not take the place of an attorney.
The Family Law Facilitator, staff, and volunteers do provide information and educational materials as a public service. The Clinic provides skilled neutral persons who are available to both parties with valuable information regarding the legal procedures necessary to complete the court action.
The Family Law Pro Per Clinic CANNOT assist individuals with:
- Complex cases or multiple contested issues. You are advised to seek the services of a private attorney in such situations. The Pro Per Clinic does not assist with contempts of court or QDRO's/ retirements.
- Subpoenas
There may be an extended wait for services.
